The University of South Africa (UNISA), founded in 1873, is the first public university in the world to teach exclusively by means of distance education. It has over 400,000 students, including international students from over 130 countries worldwide. As a comprehensive open distance e-learning university (CoDeL), Unisa offers both vocational and academic programmes, many of which have received international accreditation. The university has been at the forefront of shaping and transforming the higher education landscape in the process spawning the South African university system, providing access to educational opportunities for marginalised communities.
