Founded in 1836, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE) is the main government institution in Egypt that is responsible for basic education; kindergarten to grade 12. While governed by the laws and legislations of the Egyptian constitution, MoETE endorses and ensures equal opportunity for education to all, with more than 50 thousand public schools providing free education for more that 22 million students.

Since 2014, the Egyptian government has set education reform as one of its top national development priorities. In the academic year 2018/2019, the MoETE launched the new vision for education in Egypt, specifically:

1. Education 2.0: Education 2.0 is a new system, on pre K and grade 1, that follows a multi-disciplinary learning approach whereby language, math, social studies and science will all be taught together in an integrated and interlinked package, by the same teacher following specific themes that provide structure for the class discussions, projects and activities.

2. Education 1.1: The MoETE also focuses on incorporating technology in the education system, the reason why the ministry introduced ‘Education 1.1’; a revamped secondary school system, where students utilize new technologies such as a tablet to access the Egyptian Knowledge bank —one of the world’s largest digital libraries. Besides technology, ‘Education 1.1’ aims to promote learning for life and endorsing the way students learn through understanding and not memorizing. The examination for the new system ensures students’ understanding of the material as it is relying on the ‘open-book’ examination style.

3. Adapting a new system of technical education with international standards, ‘Technical Education 2.0’.

Further, MoETE realizes the importance of technical education and vocational training and their role in qualifying a large number of young people, as it can provide with skills and capabilities allowing them to meet the needs of the job market for highly educated, well-trained and greatly skilled workforce that is able to deal with up-to-date technology. The ‘Technical Education 2.0’ is an innovative program that will be the spearhead of the transformation of the Egyptian Technical and vocational Education and training system, based on a new vision and sustainable approach for the development of the future Egyptian professional work force. The academic year 2018/2019 saw the introduction of a new system observing the implementation of its first blocks through the “Applied Technology Schools”; a collaboration between MoETE and private sector in the labor market, as well as international accreditation institutes.
