University of Vocational Technology (UoVT) was established in 2008 by upgrading the National Institute of Technical Education (NITESL). UoVT was established under the Ministry of Vocational & Technical Training under the Parliament Act No.31 of 2008. The main aim of the University is to improve both quantitative and qualitative aspects of Technical Education and Vocational Training in Sri Lanka:

(i) to assist in the progressive development of students in the TVET sector to acquire a university education

(ii) to provide pedagogical training for Trainers serving in TVET organizations

(iii) to assist in the development of course curricula for the TVET sector

(iv) to provide extension courses on continuous professional development

The University of Vocational Technology has the same legal and academic status as any other national university in Sri Lanka. According to Section 6 and 7 of the Public Administration Circular No. 16/92, dated 13.03.92, issued by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education & Vocational Education, the degrees awarded by University of Vocational technology are treated as equivalent to degrees awarded by any other University under the purview of the University Grants Commission, and the universities listed in Association of Commonwealth Universities, and/or in the International handbook of Universities.
