U N E S C O convened a consultation on HIV/AIDS and education from 4 to 6 March 2003 in Kigali, Rwanda. The consultation was hosted by the Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management (KIST). It brought together senior officials from the four countries in the U N E S C O Nairobi Office country cluster grouping - namely, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The Heads of the Teacher Service Commissions (TSCs), Heads/ Coordinators of the AIDS Control Units within Ministries of Education and senior Directors responsible for curriculum development also participated. Members of the consultation included the Secretaries-General of the U N E S C O National Commissions from the cluster countries and U N E S C O Officers from the Nairobi Cluster Office, the U N E S C O Bujumbura Office and the U N E S C O Kigali Office. The Honourable Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, in Rwanda, opened the meeting.

The consultation benefited from technical support provided by the Mobile Task Team on HIV and Education (MTT)1 along with other leading experts in the field of HIV/AIDS

and education. consultation agenda and list of participants are appended. The consultation took into consideration and built on the outputs from the World Bank's subregional seminar on 'Accelerating the Education Sector Response to HIV/AIDS in Africa' that took place in Mombasa, Kenya, in November 2002, at which representatives

from Kenya and Uganda participated.
