“Let’s make sure today’s learners and future generations can access the education they need, to create a more sustainable, inclusive, just and peaceful world for all.”

Following this statement, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for TVET were pleased to invite the global TVET community to a dialogue forum on 14 September 2023 in Bonn, Germany’s UN city. The forum discussed what is needed to prepare the workforce for a just transition to a green economy while addressing inherent challenges in the current governance systems of TVET.

UNESCO-UNEVOC spotlighted UNESCO’s support for the global transition to inclusive green and digital economies and the required transformation of TVET systems, institutions and programmes. A BMZ-commissioned study series on “Skills for a Just Transition to a Green Future” was presented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, shedding light on TVET in renewable energies, sustainable construction and sustainable mobility sectors and presenting a vision to transform TVET for a greener future.

Objectives

The forum aimed to:

• advance discourse on preparing the workforce for a just transition to a green economy and on opportunities for transforming TVET systems to promote green skills.

• promote a new vision for supporting TVET to adapt to the challenges of a green transformation with respect to sectors that have the most carbon emissions.

Target participants

This event brought together political decision-makers, TVET experts, academics, and international development stakeholders across green sectors.

Modality

The event took place in Bonn, welcoming in-person attendance of all invitees. Selected sessions could be followed online via Microsoft Teams for those who were unable to attend the event.

The forum was conducted in English.
