The UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning and the UNESCO Cairo Office organized a hybrid side event, ‘Greening TVET, adult learning and education’, at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27). The event shed light on the importance of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and adult learning and education (ALE) for climate action.

Citizens worldwide – no matter their age – must be empowered with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to demand and support the green transition of our societies, as advocated in the Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 framework as well as enshrined in SDG Target 4.7, and, indeed, in the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Climate change mitigation requires strong cross-sectoral and inter-ministerial partnerships to deliver programmes aimed at raising awareness and equipping all individuals with the skills and knowledge to lead the transformation to a sustainable future. The new UNESCO strategy for TVET (2022-2029) supports the repositioning of TVET to be a pathway for individuals to learn, work and live, and catalyse digital and green transformation and sustainable economies.

The side event highlighted the role of TVET and ALE and the importance of a targeted strategy in TVET and ALE provision for a sustainable and green future. It also showcased good strategic practices at the national, local, institutional and individual level from the UNEVOC Network, the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities and the UNESCO ESD Network.
