The Department of Vocational and Technical Education was established in 1993 through the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Ghana to train professionally qualified TVET educators, managers, supervisors, leaders, policymakers and researchers for the Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education and the Service Sector.
The Home Economics Programme, formerly located in the Department of Science Education was moved in to become the nucleus of the new department. The Department now offers undergraduate programmes in Home Economics Education, Communication Design Education, Fine Arts Education (Painting or Sculpture option) and Construction Technology Education. The Department also offer graduate and post-graduate programmes in Food Science and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles as well as Family Management. Entrepreneurship training forms a core component of all academic programmes in the Department. This is to prepare students adequately for self-employment as a means of ensuring their employability after completing their undergraduate and graduate programmes.
Beyond the traditional academic programmes, the Department periodically offer skills development training programmes to train and upgrade the skills of men and women in specific trades to equip them with relevant skills and competencies for practice in the informal sector.
