Kyambogo University (KyU) was established with the primary mandate of promoting and advancing knowledge creation and skills development in Science, Technology, Education, and related fields, with due regard to quality, equity, progress, and the transformation of society. One of the University’s key objectives is to strengthen and expand vocational studies, innovation and skills development in Uganda and the wider region.
The GRISD-UNEVOC Centre at Kyambogo University, is a spill over initiative after the closure of the NORHED supported project in 2020. The Center has continued to expand its research, training and documentation work through partnerships (Local and International). It is dedicated to strengthening Non-Formal/Community based and Work-Related Skills Development especially the marginalised groups, Green and Indigenous Skills Development, Gender and Inclusive skills development and lastly Digitalisation are currently key focus areas for the GRISD-UNEVOC Center at Kyambogo University.
Short-term training programmes, are implemented in collaboration with communities, industry and other world-of-work stakeholders. In addition, there is an increasing emphasis on lifelong learning and the development of locally relevant skills within non-formal education and training contexts. Such learning is directly linked to local livelihoods and labour market needs, is often acquired through apprenticeships, mentorship, and participation in productive activities, and supports employability, self-employment, and sustainable livelihoods. By recognizing skills gained through experience and embedding learning within the world of work, this approach operationalizes core principles of work-related learning within lifelong learning frameworks.
