"A skills competition provides an opportunity for individuals or teams to compete against one another to demonstrate their talent in a particular vocational skill, using tasks derived from real life, industry-based scenarios. Each individual’s work is scored by experts to an agreed criteria, and the highest score(s) go through to the next stage of the competition.

Taking part in competitions is proven to enhance a person’s learning and development. The activity is linked to apprenticeship standards and designed to focus on capacity building in core skills and competencies valued by employers including team-work, problem solving, time management and working under pressure."

Skills competitions are held on local, national, regional (such as EuroSkills, AfricaSkills or AsiaSkills) and global level. They are professional championships for apprentices and students in vocational skills training. Global competitions are run by the organisation WorldSkills International (WSI). Alongside its members and partners, WorldSkills aims to boost the appeal of vocational training through competitions and promote economic prosperity through education. International competitions are held every two years.  At WorldSkills Kazan 2019, competitions were held in 56 different skills areas.

Serves as a venue to recognize the skills excellence of young industry skilled workers and graduates of TVET institutions.
