BILT Learning Labs are an opportunity for TVET stakeholders to explore specific Innovation and Learning Practices from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.

This Learning Lab took place on 20 November 2024. It focused on the use of virtual reality (VR) in vocational education and training programmes. The discussion covered perspectives from both TVET providers and industry.

Extended reality, Virtual reality, augmented reality

Within a rapidly changing world of work, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) must continuously evolve to match labour market needs. TVET institutions often turn to new technologies and digital tools to support this evolution. The digitalization process is not just about integrating digital resources, but it is also about ensuring that trainees acquire specific skill sets relevant to their trades, as well as the digital competencies essential for the future.

Extended reality (XR) technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), are often sought after tools to enhance traditional learning methods. These immersive learning experiences can offer alternatives which allow students to master skills within safe simulated environments.

However, the steps needed to be taken by TVET providers towards integrating XR technologies can seem demanding. Determining where to begin can be overwhelming, given the many digital tools available. Additionally, adapting pedagogical approaches and integrating these technologies into teaching methods can presents significant challenges.

This BILT Learning Lab aims to delve into these questions and many more featuring three practice examples from Vietnam, Germany and Ghana.

Speakers

Laurent Da Dalto, CEO and Founder, MIMBUS, France

Dr. Laurent Da Dalto is the CEO and founder of MIMBUS. He holds a PhD in Virtual Reality and has been working on the transfer of new technologies to manual trades training since 2001. In 2004, he conceived of the first simulator dedicated to the training of welding motion.

He created MIMBUS in 2011 to provide vocational training centres with a global offer.

Two years later, he created a unique simulator, one of a kind in the world capable of training carpenters and cabinet markers. He is a member of the European Vocational Training Association (EVTA) and he regularly gives talks to promote the use of the new technologies and artificial intelligence dedicated to vocational education and training.
