Promising practice: Velocity Arcademy’s gamified upskilling platform

Velocity Arcademy, a self-funded EdTech start-up operating in Cambodia, has developed a gamified upskilling platform that aims to transform teachers and trainers into digital educators by equipping them with up-to-date digital and pedagogical skills and competencies. Prior to launching its platform in 2020, Velocity Arcademy spoke to several TVET providers who were seeking digital skills training for their teachers/trainers to help them to deliver education and training remotely. While the providers understood the need for digitalization to expand access to their programmes, they did not understand the importance of linking digital skills to pedagogical skills to introduce new and more engaging teaching techniques. Velocity Arcademy has designed its upskilling platform to motivate teachers/trainers to participate in continuous professional development through incorporating two features: gamification, which makes training fun, and a system of digital badges, which are awarded to teachers/trainers who complete its training modules. Velocity Arcademy’s upskilling platform is usable in low-bandwidth internet areas and is available in both Khmer and English.
