Training teachers in an HIV and AIDS context: Experiences from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia
Under UNESCO's strategy for greater involvement by its education sector in combating the spread of HIV and AIDS, the Paris-based International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) launched, in conjunction with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), three studies to analyze the responses of teacher-training colleges (TTCs) to HIV and AIDS in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. In parellel, the UNESCO Regional Office for Education (BREDA) in Dakar conducted a similar study in Zambia. These studies examined how teacher-training colleges deal with the challenges of HIV and AIDS. The studies explored how ministries of education and teacher-training colleges and institutions have developed (or not) policy and programmatic interventions in response to HIV and AIDS. The studies' results will be used as an entry point to create regional inter-country information networks on better and more effective responses to HIV and AIDs in teacher-training colleges.
