Adult Learning and Institutions of Higher Education: Improving the Conditions and Quality of Adult Learning

Report on the Workshop Held at the CONFINTEA Mid-term Review Conference, Bangkok, Thailand, September 2003

What role should institutions of higher education play in the development of adult learning? What changes to policy, planning, resources and administration are necessary to make these institutions more accessible to groups of learners outside the formal system? A workshop at the CONFINTEA V review conference in Bangkok took a look at these questions, discussing the need for universities to install courses of study specializing in adult education, to disseminate information, and to influence state and national policies on these matters. A number of universities have responded to this challenge and although programs are often beset with budgetary problems, solutions have been found. The workshop also discussed research issues and links between the goals of CONFINTEA V and Education For All, and reported on progress made so far, making recommendations for future action.
