15 July is World Youth Skills Day (WYSD), the day on which the world celebrates TVET. This year's theme is "Youth Skills for Peace and Development". Please join the activities that are organized by UNESCO-UNEVOC in Bonn, by the UNESCO GSA team in Paris and by UN New York. Consult our WYSD page for details.
As we navigate the dynamic landscape of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), we provide you with updates on our ongoing efforts to support Member States in equipping the global workforce with skills that are future-ready. This edition shines a light on our recent initiatives related to sustainability in TVET, the Bridging Innovation and Learning in TVET (BILT) project, inclusion, and the collaborations within the global UNEVOC Network.
Moreover, our recently published Biennial Report for 2022-2023 underscores the interconnected themes of recovery and resilience as the central focus of UNESCO-UNEVOC’s work during this period. This demonstrates our commitment to providing support and addressing the post-COVID recovery efforts of Member States.
We look forward to continued collaboration with our global partners, Member States, UNEVOC Centres and TVET stakeholders in working towards a just and sustainable future for all.

Preparing the labour force: Future skills identification, reskilling, upskilling and development of core competencies
The first of four Webinars of the BILT clean energy webinar series delved into skills and competencies required for the future clean energy workforce. Our speakers discussed policy perspectives and strategies for reskilling and upskilling workers from both international and national perspectives.

Developing skills to meet climate goals
In a panel discussion at June UN Climate meetings (SB 60), UNEVOC Programme Officer Priscilla Gatonye presented UNEVOC's research findings, highlighting that very few countries have prioritized TVET or laid out strategies for skill development in their National climate plans. She advised countries to invest in TVET, bearing in mind that trained workforce operates in high-emitting sectors. The shift to meet climate goals and ensure a just transition requires changes in the way jobs are performed.

Enhancing TVET collaboration and green skills development
At a conference on “Vocational Excellence for a Green Europe” hosted by FH JOANNEUM in Graz, Austria, Friedrich Huebler, Head of UNEVOC, highlighted the crucial role that UNEVOC plays in fostering collaboration among TVET institutions across different countries. He also described how internationalization can enhance the quality of TVET worldwide. Kenneth Barrientos, UNEVOC Programme Officer, spoke about UNEVOC’s commitment to the development of green skills and competencies.

Kickoff: Strengthening TVET in South Sudan
UNESCO-UNEVOC together with UNESCO office in Juba kicked off its technical assistance for the project “Strengthening TVET in South Sudan”, funded by the Government of Sweden. Over 30 representatives from national bodies and ministries, development partners, training providers and academic institutions in South Sudan are sharing perspectives on the barriers and practices in greening TVET and gender empowerment as part of a national stakeholder mapping and consultation meeting called by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction.

The future of TVET in Iraq. National TVET Leadership Programme
More than 100 policy and decision makers participated in ‘The future of TVET in Iraq: International Trends and their relevance for the Iraqi National Education Strategy 2022-2031’ in May 2024. This National TVET Leadership Programme was organized by UNESCO-UNEVOC and UNESCO Baghdad, in cooperation with the European Union.

New Innovative and Promising Practices
In April, UNESCO-UNEVOC published 21 new innovative and promising practices. The practices show how TVET can be designed and delivered to address contextual challenges. They present the enabling conditions for success and provide a snapshot of the positive impact on communities. The total number of practices in the database is 126.

BILT Bridging Event: Towards inclusive excellence in TVET
Cometa, a UNEVOC Centre, hosted the BILT Bridging Event for Europe from 22 to 24 April 2024 in Como, Italy. The event provided a platform for international policy learning, knowledge exchange, innovation transfer and networking among TVET policy-makers, practitioners and researchers.

BILT project launches Expert Group on building and construction
From 2024 to 2025, the Bridging Innovation and Learning in TVET (BILT) project is convening its third Expert Group; this time focusing on new qualifications and competencies for building and construction in the three BILT regions of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe.

BILT Learning Lab - 'Equitable, excellent, empowering: Innovative TVET in hospitality'
Taking two examples from the hospitality sector, this BILT Learning Lab aims to explore how to create inclusive settings, based on holistic approaches that extend beyond the classroom and in which ways inclusive TVET programmes can prepare students for structural changes in both regional and global economies.

National Skills University Islamabad joins the Self-Reflection process within the framework of BILT (UNEVOC Centre - Pakistan)
The National Skills University Islamabad, a pioneer in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the country, has taken a significant step towards global leadership in skills education.

Fiji National University carried out a 3-day Self-Reflection workshop in partnership with SZPU (UNEVOC Centres Fiji and China)
With the support of UNESCO-UNEVOC, Shenzhen Polytechnic University (SZPU) and Fiji National University (FNU) successfully implemented the UNESCO-UNEVOC Self-Reflection Workshop under the Bridging Innovation and Learning in TVET (BILT) project from May 28th to 30th, 2024.

SENATI INNOVA contest awards ceremony (UNEVOC Centre Peru)
The UNEVOC Center in Peru organized SENATI Innova 2023, a national event in which students and instructors from SENATI demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity to address real challenges and develop projects on innovation and technology. More than 240 students and 300 instructors from all over Peru participated. The themes of the winning projects were: use of technology based on artificial intelligence, internet of things, agile methodologies and project management tools adapted to different sectors.

Fiji National University: National TVET Forum - 2024 (UNEVOC Centre - Fiji)
The National TVET Forum - 2024, was organized by the Fiji National University on Monday 27th May to discuss important issues that affect TVET in Fiji like skills gap, underemployment in TVET, Greening TVET, climate resilience through TVET, technologies of the future, and skills of the future. Key TVET stakeholders from government, industries/organizations, TVET training institutions, unions, NGOs and university students participated in the 1-day forum.

National Green jobs and Green Skills Development Workshop (UNEVOC Centre - Kenya)
Kenya's UNEVOC Centre, the Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (DTVET) participated in the first ever National Green Jobs and Skills Development Workshop on 3 May 2024. The workshop was organized within the framework of the Green Jobs for Youth Pact, an initiative by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) along with the Government of Kenya and Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) as implementing partner.

International Symposium on Education and Skills for a Future-Ready Workforce (UNEVOC Centre - Qatar)
This symposium was organized by the Minister of Education and Higher Education and in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Higher Education Committee, UNESCO and ILO. This event brought together government ministers, academics and industry stakeholders to plan for a highly skilled and competent future workforce.

TVET Leaders Forum 2024 at Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNEVOC Centre - UAE)
ACTVET organized a TVET Leaders Forum supported by the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs on 22nd April 2024. The forum featured two sessions: “Inspiring Emirati Youth,” which included presentations and panel discussions by ACTVET alumni who have successfully attained leading positions in the UAE workforce, and “Apprenticeship and TVET for Sustainable Development,” in which Olivier Pieume, Head of the UNEVOC Network Secretariat participated.

Hudson Valley Community College Inauguration Ceremony (UNEVOC Centre - USA)
Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC), in cooperation with UNESCO-UNEVOC, organized an inauguration ceremony at its campus in Troy, New York on 11 and 12 April 2024. The ceremony symbolized the formal induction of HVCC into the UNEVOC Network – the UNESCO-UNEVOC global Network of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions. HVCC was admitted to the UNVEVOC Network in June 2023, shortly before the USA rejoined UNESCO as a Member State.
