Dear Readers,
Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) continues to evolve in response to changing demands. This issue of the UNEVOC Quarterly presents joint programmes and activities addressing these shifts and opening new pathways to learning and employment.
The latest Global Education Monitoring Report on access and equity highlights both the progress made in expanding access to education and the persistent barriers that affect participation, progression and completion. In this context, UNESCO-UNEVOC’s Gender Equality and Social Inclusion programme is supporting UNEVOC Centres in creating more inclusive TVET environments and widening access to training and lifelong learning opportunities. In parallel, initiatives such as the ongoing skills development project in Uzbekistan demonstrate how targeted reforms and national commitments can improve job prospects and strengthen adaptability, particularly in rural areas.
Innovation is also reshaping skills development. From the integration of artificial intelligence to innovative approaches in sustainability, global citizenship education and career guidance, training is becoming more relevant, flexible and future-oriented. These efforts support a just and green transition, underscoring the TVET sector’s role in helping societies navigate digital and environmental change.
The growing UNEVOC Network reflects this shared commitment, enabling countries and institutions to learn from each other through the exchange of knowledge and experience.

Championing gender equality and social inclusion across the UNEVOC Network
Following the launch of the UNESCO-UNEVOC Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) programme in November 2025, nominated GESI focal points from the UNEVOC Network have completed a series of capacity-building programmes, comprising seven modules on the UNESCO Online Learning Platform and five live webinars.

Reimagining skills development in Uzbekistan
In 2025, the Vocational Education Agency (VEA) was established under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation (MHESI). Since then, UNESCO‑UNEVOC has been working closely with the UNESCO Tashkent Office and national partners through the EU-funded ‘Skills Development for Employability in Rural Areas of Uzbekistan’ project to strengthen skills develop in Uzbekistan.

A partners’ meeting kicked off collaboration for the ‘Supporting TVET for a just and green transition’ project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project leverages opportunities for knowledge exchange on successful greening TVET initiatives across the UNEVOC Network.

New innovative and promising practices in TVET
UNESCO-UNEVOC has added 16 new innovative and promising practices to its database. These examples showcase how TVET can be designed and delivered to respond effectively to local challenges. The new practices cover topics such as AI training for teachers, global citizenship education, environmental sustainability, career guidance and low-tech solutions.

Updates from the UNEVOC Network
New members join the UNEVOC Network
The UNEVOC Network, UNESCO’s global network for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, expands international collaboration with the addition of eight new UNEVOC Centres. The Network now consists of 253 UNEVOC Centres in 152 countries.

UNISA inaugurated as a UNEVOC Centre
On 23 March 2026, the University of South Africa was inaugurated as a new UNEVOC Centre. The Centre is set to become a hub for innovation, research and knowledge exchange, strengthening South Africa’s TVET sector while contributing to global collaboration and more responsive, future-oriented skills development systems.

Experts from the UNEVOC Network participate in workshops on the integration of AI in TVET
UNESCO-UNEVOC held four expert workshops in March 2026 to support the development of a practical guide on the integration of AI in TVET. Organized in collaboration with Shenzhen Polytechnic University and Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, the online workshops brought together 34 experts from all five regions of the UNEVOC Network.
Global Skills Academy AI EmpowerED programme expands to Malaysia
UNESCO, in partnership with Microsoft Elevate, KPMG International, and Tablet Academy, is expanding its transformative Digital and AI Skills Programme, AI EmpowerED, to Malaysia. The programme was recently launched at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), a UNEVOC Centre, where 36 teachers from TVET institutions participated in a two-day onsite bootcamp.
